Club: Torquay Pickleball Club
Involvement with pickleball:
- Treasurer for Pickleball Victoria
- Club Volunteer
- Player
Open to these positions: Secretary; Treasurer
Conflicts of interest: None
Skills, knowledge, and experience:
I've been the PV Treasurer since February 2024. During this time I've been proactive in improving financial processes, contributing to Committee agendas and meetings, documenting key information in a shared drive, undertaken additional tasks/roles including membership reporting, and communicated with clubs on a regular basis. The latter has included providing information on the use of Revolutionise, detailed breakdowns on their membership and generally endeavouring to provide information to assist clubs. I provided a comprehensive and detailed submission for the audit and prepared budgets for the 2024 Vic Open and 2024-2025 financial year. I've also reached out and established relationships with various PAA staff and Board members, as well as executives in other States.
My career mostly encompassed working at several universities, with roles that included compliance reporting, executive briefings, member & secretary of major committees, presentations, liaison with a wide variety of staff internally and externally, project management, data & systems analysis, budget projections, surveys and governance.
I've undertaken different volunteer roles over the years, many were with squash clubs or the state association. My most recent role of relevance was Secretary on the Board of Directors of Permaculture Australia from 2018-2022. As a not-for-profit registered environmental charity, I was responsible for various governance tasks and compliance reporting. Some examples of my initiatives during that time was a survey of members, a volunteer agreement and induction for incoming Board members.
Given the above, I have a broad depth of relevant skills, experience and knowledge as well as a genuine interest, the time and commitment to continue on the PV Committee.
Goals for 2024-2025:
Whilst I would be happy to continue as Treasurer, my interest and background more aligns with the Secretary role. I've put my nomination forward for both roles, only to ensure the Treasurer role is filled, should there be no other nomination.
If continuing as Treasurer, I would continue to be proactive in improving financial processes and documentation as well as putting forward policies and procedures as appropriate. I obtained in-principle approval for the purchase of a laptop and financial software, so would move ASAP to transition from the current Excel basis of financial reporting. Likewise, I would be happy to do a handover to any new Treasurer.
If elected as Secretary, I would focus on addressing governance gaps and work closely with key PAA staff and Board. An effective Committee includes te President and Secretary working closely on key points of upcoming meeting agendas and other matters, so I would be looking to establish a strong working relationship with the new President. As my interests have always lain in improving things to make it easier for those coming after me, I would be utilising knowledge from my time as Permaculture Australia Board Secretary to this end.
Given the rapid growth of Pickleball within Victoria, represented by statistics I've produced (which showed other interesting information about PV's membership base), there's a definite need to review and update the Strategic Plan. I'm keen to contribute and attach measures to key parts of the plan so progress can be monitored more effectively.
In regards to short-term goals, the budget for the coming year included provision for a number of new initiatives as well as increased funding for the administrative position.
Keeping the Committee to a maximum of 9 members would be ideal, supported by sub-committees or working groups. Ideally, the target of at least 40% female representation can be met, thereby satisfying one of the key criteria for State sporting body recognition and grant eligibility.
